First day of 4th grade!

I took Joseph to school today for his first day. We went out to breakfast at Chick Fil A and then went on to school. We met his teacher, found his room and in general, got acclimated… but it was a short time to do so. By the time I was leaving he seemed to be back to his brooding self. I just hope that he can relax a bit. If he would, he wouldn’t seem so depressed with new adventures. I ended up threatening to come back and tickle him if he kept it up — which made him laugh.

New environments are just really hard and he’s not the best with change. His teacher only knows that he has an IEP in place, not about his demeanor.

I got about 30 seconds to introduce him, give her my cell phone number and say that if anything happens she should call me. I said he gets very nervous about a lot of stuff, such as being in front of the class at all. She said “well, he doesn’t have to be in front. Each group is going to have a job, so if someone else can be the speaker, you don’t have to talk.” Obviously, she didn’t get it. I did tell her we should sit down together, SOON, to ensure she understands. Right in the morning on the first day is probably NOT the best time to discuss it.

I just hope the day goes better than I expect!
