The $55 splinter

Abby and I rushed to the Urgent care center tonight at 8:30 (made it in 15 minutes without speeding because I didn’t hit a SINGLE traffic light!). In any case, the cause of our last minute venture was a 1/2″ splinter in her big toe. How did it get there? Not really sure, but the girls were out on the deck, barefoot and I saw Abby playing with her foot and saying “ouchie” so I knew something had happened. Upon closer inspection I realized there was this monsterous splinter in her toe and there was NO WAY I was going to get it out.

So I had Ron look and we decided it needed attention urgently. So, off we went to Accent Urgent Care. I can’t say enough about how good my baby girl was, nor how nice the Dr. and nurses were. They too were amazed at how good Abby was.

In any case, they numbed her toe with a gel, then had to numb it further with a needle and whatever numbing medicine was in there. Then, they spent over 15 minutes digging out the bits and pieces of the darn splinter!

Abby had to lay on her belly throughout this and she did so without even a whimper … I figured if this were Emi she’s be screaming and crying and trying to run around the room. 😉 So, she stayed on her belly and we counted, did the ABCs, sang Twinkle twinkle — which I had to stop midway through because it was obviously hurting and she started crying. 🙁

When all was said and done, she got a “big ole bandaid” on her toe — a bandaid wrapped in gauze and that sticky material stuff and has to soak it, then apply Neosporin daily for two more days.

Dr. and nurse thinks it will heal just fine. No stiches or anything, but they did have to peel a bunch of the outer layer of skin off her toe. My poor baby! At one point, when it was hurting and I was trying to comfort and distract her, I said “when this is done, do you want to get ice cream?” and she said yes.

When it was all done, we were sitting on the chair again waiting for instructions and she turned and looked at me and said “I ceam?” 🙂 Of course. Who can resist such a big girl with a big ole bandaid? 🙂

The urgent care visit was $50 … the ice cream was $5. Very worth the extra $5 for such a cooperative little girl.

All in all, we were there for over an hour and didn’t get hom until after 10pm… and as I was putting the girls to bed I realized Emi had a splinter too! Ugh! This was MUCH smaller and I manager to get it out with the tweezers, in pieces too as it kept breaking off like Abby’s had. But, I did manage, then swabbed it in Neosporin and slapped on a bandaid too … gotta have bandaids. 😀 They make everything heal (I mean feel) better. 🙂
