The cost of twins the first year

The detailed me has kept records of money spent from June 11, 2004 throug June 11, 2005 on the girls. This is *real* dollars spent on our twins in the first year. There are plenty of estimates out there, so I wanted to know what we actually spent!

So, at least by major category, I have it recorded. I should have broken it out more, but this turned out very interesting to me. I don’t think most people have a clue how much they spend on their babies… let alone twins!

Let’s do this the MasterCard way… read it real slow with a pause between the words and the $. And just picture it in your mind’s eye.

The NICU and after…$6,536
The family room conversion to daycare center…$3,263
Frilly dresses, bows and buttons…$1,003
Seeing your babies turn 1…priceless

Here are the details…
* Clothing, $1003 What can I say? 🙂
* Food : $349 — not a drop of formula — mommy milk all the way! So this is anything that said Gerber, Beech-Nut, etc. on it Stage 1 and up.
* Baby Supplies : $2,044 OMGoodness! This is diapers, wipes, toys, anything we needed for them around the house.
* Furniture : $170 — we were lucky… already had 1 crib, borrowed a 2nd and only had to buy a chest of drawers
* Photos : $318 — I’m so glad I do these on my own now! That was in the first 6 months alone.
* Doctors, Medicine & Medical Supplies : $6,536 That’s the biggie with just over $6k due to the NICU stay. And that’s not the hospital’s bill to insurance!
* First Birthday : $382 (oops, guess I went overboard!)

Would I spend it all again? You betcha!

Oh, and to close out the commercial… “for everything else, there’s Mastercard…” and Visa and American Express! 😉

The first year of twins is expensive, but OH SO WORTH IT!
